Robert Dunlop was born on July 2, 1909 in Boston, Massachusetts to Scottish immigrant parents. His father was a marine engineer. Fred H. "Bud" Billups, Jr. was born in 1938 in Richmond, Virginia. His father worked for Standard Oil of New Jersey and his family moved a great deal, including several years in Cuba.
